UPSIDE-DOWN PERSPECTIVE
From content to form and back

Through a collaboration of A14/Daniela Lorenzi and Cristina Balbiano d'Aramengo, the theme of this new series of workshops proposes bookbinding and original print making techniques as instruments for graphic design project planning and production.
Intentionality, technique, form, content, and language are all elements which equally contribute to the successful design, planning, and creation of a book or a folder.
The workshops provide an opportunity to closely look at the world of small publishing houses and limited edition artists books, and draw inspiration from artists and graphic designers projects, as well as from significant experiences in bookbinding.

THE PROGRAM #06
Black and its variations

Mark / Relief
Sign / Matter
Depth / Surface
Sharpness / Nuances
Timbral / Atmospheric

After 5 meetings where we have proposed different research on how we can predispose ourselves facing the space of the sheet, as a place that receives our graphic work, we get finally to black. In previous meetings, starting from reflection on white, we entered in the dimension of the transparencies and then have come to gray; gray which, also considered as a combination of all colors, has inevitably brought us up to play with their fullness.
And here we come to the black, reversing somewhat the common attitude of those who for the first time approach the world of graphic art, with the idea that this path may have given greater awareness and technical capacity even simply in placing a sign, a trace, in our composition space.
No worries though, the workshop is suitable for everyone, even those who have not being with us before.
Using a pocket binding designed as container for our tests and notes you can revisit techniques already partially experienced, together with others that are part of the wide range of traditional techniques of engraving and new experimentations. As always based on your vocabulary, and with some of our suggestions, we will set up two days of intense work, with the possibility of complete choice among the materials that are in the printing house (matrices: metal, acrylic, wood, cardboard, papers: Hahnemühle, Graphia, Zerkall, Amatruda and others).
