SIMPLE HINGES FOR RIGHT-ANGLED BOXES

This workshop is the continuation in the series of boxes-making.
In the previous two workshops the basic forms, boxes with a loose lid, were treated.
A step further is to connect the lid to the base, in this case by a hinge.

In this five-day workshop we start with an explanation about all kind of hinges and their function. Also the technical conditions for a good functioning box will be treated, translated in formulae.

We start making a box with a simple lid, flat and without sides, laying on top of a right-angled 4-sidedbase. The covering material on the outside will be book cloth.

The second box will be a simple clam shell-box, a 'shoe-box-model'.
In this model the base has four sides, with one side with an opening as a grip to take out the content of the base, a loose spine and a lid with 3 sides, all covered on the outside by one piece of book cloth, with the well known and refined technique devised by Cor.

In this workshop the emphasis will be on the proportions, which is very important for these type of boxes, the construction, the hinge and its functioning well, the covering and the finishing touches.

The participants shall work at the same pace: in other words, we will work as a group, even though each person on his own boxes.
It's a week of hard working, in a motivating surroundings, fully increasing your basis of box-making.

This workshop is designed for advanced students and is a sequel to the workshops 'boxes I & II'. Also those students, professionals or amateurs, who have already gained knowledge of box-making (cover- & neck-box) elsewhere can participate in this workshop.

Cor Aerssens, Dutch box maker and bookbinder, takes his 25 years of experience with him, to lead this all to a good end.
