Two days dedicated to decorated papers and long stitch bindings, to experiment contemporary techniques of paper decoration with the use of inks and acrylic colors
Papers decorated with these techniques are extremely versatile and can be made using few tools easily available in arts and crafts stores. Using spatulas, brushes, sponge rolls or making your own EVA foam stamp you can create modern decorated paper inspired by historical and traditional techniques such as monotype, blockprint and spatula textures on paper.

Long stitch is one of the oldest methods used to collect pages in a binding, often to protect archival documents and scattered sections in a simple but robust way, fixing them directly to the cover.
The stitching thread remains visible outside the book, creating interesting graphic patterns on the spine. In fact, many variants are possible, which in more elaborate cases may include crossings, textures, knots; it is also possible to use threads of different colours. In any case the sections are sustained homogeneously and the volume opens completely and harmoniously.
No adhesive is used.

Program
In the first part of the workshop we will make decorated papers using various techniques and tools: spatulas, sponge rolls, brushes. Participants will be guided into making their own EVA foam stamp and how to use it to create patterned papers, using acrylics and linocut inks.
The papers will be used in the second part of the course to make long stitch bindings: as traditionally, the gatherings are sewn not on supports but directly on the cover, providing anchor holes positioned according to precise patterns that are marked both on the sections and on the spine of the book. It will be possible to make at least two sewing variations, experimenting with different patterns.

To whom it is addressed
The workshop is for amateurs and paper and book professionals: calligraphers, illustrators, origamists, but also students, researchers and professionals that look at books for research or conservation: conservators, librarians, antiquarian booksellers, book historians, book conservators and students of these disciplines.
Previous knowledge is not required: just will to experiment.
