Aimed at those who want to approach bookbinding for the first time, this course opens the doors to the essential basics of bookbinding.
The theoretical part involves the knowledge of traditional tools and materials and their interactions (paper, cardboard, adhesives, bookcloth...), an introduction to the nomenclature and the historical types of bindings, and a structural analysis of the studied different models.
During the practical exercises, the basic operations will be faced, from the preparation of gatherings and endpapers, to the sewing, to the forwarding, up to the measurement, cutting, lining and mounting steps of the covers.
During the course, various models will be developed, both traditional and contemporary, starting from single sheets, to the assembling of a few sections with non adhesive flexible covers, to multi-section volumes with hardcover covers; different types of sewing will be analyzed, with exercises on tape, long stitch, chain stitch, stitching without supports, assembling of paperback and cardboard covers, and half and full bookcloth lining.
All the necessary material will be made available in a pre-cut to size kit.
The program is developed throughout four months, with weekly meetings, to give the participants the opportunity to assimilate the topics addressed with continuous practice, being able to practice between one lesson and the next, and with the advantage of being able to continuously compare with the teacher and with classmates to find answers to questions that naturally arise during a training course.
The course is open to all and there are no admission requirements; good hand skills are certainly helpful.
LOCATION
The meetings will take place entirely online on Zoom platform.
TIMETABLE AND CALENDAR
