The magnetic box’s original idea belongs to Hélène Jolis, a French book artist and well known teacher of gold tooling techniques. Her idea, developed first by Sün Evrard, was further improved by Eva Szily.

The box is made of 250-400 gsm card, and it feels light and strong at the same time.
Wooden battens, in case covered in paper, reinforce head, tail and sometimes also the fore-edge; the box is closed with magnetic strips which guarantee perfect closure and protection of the content.

It is a fairly simple case to make and certainly quicker than a box built and lined in several stages; very suitable both for the conservation of valuable books and for the protection of contemporary and design projects, be they volumes or loose papers.

Particular attention is paid to measuring the parts before cutting, creasing and gluing (exploring the details to keep in mind when you want to make a balanced and correct design).

During the workshop a model will be covered, but some variations will also be shown. Each participant will create their own tailor-made case for a book they bring from home, whether it is their own binding or a pre-existing book.

During the workshop will be taught a model, tailored to a book previously bound by the participants; some variations will also be shown.

Before the workshop, participants will be given informations about materials and the size of the book to bring.
