This course is direct to starters approaching bookbinding for the first time.

Different models of bindings will be developed, both traditional and contemporary, starting gathering a few sections and ending binding rank volumes.

We will analyse different kinds of sewing, on tapes, long stitch, sewing without supports, mounting of the covers and lining.

There aren't special requirements to join the class, yet a good manual skill will help.

The theoretical part provides knowledge of tools and traditional materials and their interaction (paper, cardboard, adhesives, bookcloth...);
also an introduction to nomenclature and types of bindings, as well as historical analysis of different types of sewing and headbands.

The practical part will develop the following steps: preparation of sections, folding, cutting and pressing, preparation and mounting of the endpapers, trimming, partition of the back and perforation of the sections, sewing; measuring, cutting, lining and mounting hardcovers.
