Introduction
TOMORROW'S PAST is a small, international group of bookbinders who make modern conservation bindings for antiquarian books.
The number of bookbinders involved with Tomorrow's Past has remained fairly constant – between ten and twelve binders from UK, Italy, France, The Netherlands and others as invited. All of them work professionally as bookbinders, some as teachers, and most handle work of many different types and periods in their everyday work. This fusion of experience and historical awareness with modern conservation materials, techniques and skill has produced work which is radical in its simplicity, ingenuity and truth to materials.

Course Description
On this intensive five-day course, we will introduce the Tomorrow’s Past concept by re-creating two of Kathy Abbott’s book- structures for previous Tomorrow’s Past exhibitions: the Clip-on-cover binding and the Sacred binding. These modern conservation binding structures are very durable, fully reversible and allow the text-block to open completely flat.
Then as a group, we will examine and diagnose the problems of your own antiquarian books in need of repair or rebinding, before exploring different ways of creating new, modern conservation book structures for them.
You will examine different book structures previously created for Tomorrow’s Past exhibitions and then you will learn to make maquettes to trial your own structural ideas. Following this, you will begin the process of repairing and stabilising your text-block, ready for its new conservation binding.
Previous bookbinding experience is essential: you must either have experience in restoration/conservation AND/OR have made several types of book structures (adhesive and non-adhesive). This course is not suitable for beginners.
LOCATION
The masterclass will be held at the seventeenth century Franciscan convent in Monte Mesma. A fascinating accommodation in a serene location, among the green wood of the Special Nature Reserve of Monte Mesma, a hill 576 m. high, on the eastern side of Orta Lake. Through this class, you may get inexpensive accommodations, food included, in single rooms from the 8 to the 15 of July (7 nights).
We will cook and eat all together.
Otherwise, we can suggest additional solutions of hotels and B&B in the surroundings (map). However, in this case it is necessary to have a car, to be able to independently reach the convent each day.
DATES AND TIMES
Arrival Sunday, 8 July, departure Sunday, 15 July.
The lessons will take place from the 9 to the 14 July, from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.
There will be coffee and lunch breaks each day.
Thursday 12 is free, to allow the participants to enjoy the surroundings and the Orta Lake, or just to relax in the park and in the cloisters of the convent.
The class will be taught in English; we can assist students also in Italian and French if required.
REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT
The registration fee is 860 euro per person, including food and lodging for 7 nights (starting with dinner on Sunday 8 until breakfast of Sunday 15), coffee breaks, costs of materials and the use of the tools, provided by the organizers. Without food and lodging, the registration fee is 635 euro per person.
Travel expenses are the responsibility of the students.
A membership fee of 25 euro in the association is necessary.
To enroll, beside registering online, you must pay a first installment of 300 euro, and send a copy of the receipt along with a confirmation email, specifying whether you want to stay at the convent; please note that places available are limited, so you are invited to book early. Payment dates will determine booking priorities.
The deadline for the balance of the fee is 18 June, 2018.

MATERIALS
Participants will be given indications about the type of books to bring and work with.
CANCELLATION - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Enrolment must be cancelled in writing.
If the cancellation letter is posted four weeks or more before the workshop begins, the installment will be refunded minus a 15% cancellation charge. If the cancellation letter is posted less than four weeks but within the closing date for enrollments, then the installment will not be refunded as cancellation charge.
If the cancellation letter is posted less than two weeks before the workshop begins, then the participation fee will not be refunded. No refund will be given if students enroll but, without further notification, do not participate at the workshop.
In case the minimum number of participants should not be reached, the course will be cancelled and the whole fee refunded.
