The unbreakable collaboration between Cristina Balbiano and Daniela Lorenzi returns to the atelier, renewed for the re-edition of the historic workshop series, whose aim is to introduce bookbinding and original art printing techniques as tools for graphic design.
Content/poetics/intentionality and tools/technique/form are all interconnected elements that contribute to the design and production of artist's books and portfolios.
The aim is to explore some of the possible processes, drawing inspiration from the creations of artists, graphic designers, and specific bookbinding experiences.
REVERSING PERSPECTIVE #01
From Sheet to Book: A Game of Dualities - Introductory Workshop
Content / Form
Poetics / Technique
Casuality / Project
Word / Image
Matrix / Mirroring of the Image
A two-day workshop dedicated to creating small books.
Participants will be guided through a creative journey divided into several phases, alternating the creation of hand-printed intaglio matrices with cutting and folding methods for single sheets of 100% cotton paper.
To create the matrices, thanks to the Collograph technique, it will be possible to use bookbinding materials in unusual ways, such as thread, paper and cardboard, canvas, adhesive tape, gauze, and ribbon.
Then comes the inking phase, where the prints are impressed onto the paper using a hand-operated intaglio press.
The designed prints will then be folded, cut, and mounted following a binding prototype that is particularly effective in its structure, as it generates both pages and a cover with pockets from a single sheet.
The complexity arises from the graphic consequences of the folding, which produce a priori unpredictable outcomes.
The first day will be dedicated to creating a first book, analyzing its graphic implications on the layout and leaving room for improvisation and discovery.
The second day will focus on creating a second template, addressing the topic of composition and planning, so as to plan the content in a more structured way based on the template's layout.
The printing of this second matrix and the folding of the sheet will give rise to a second book, with visual and narrative outcomes different from the first.
In short, a journey from sheet to book and from book to sheet, with very different outcomes, thanks to the alternation between free exercise and structured guidance.
No specific skills are required to participate; all that's needed is curiosity and a willingness to get involved.
