Cor Aerssens

I was born in 1949, and after an explorative phase of life I started in 1972 as apprentice on a bookbindery in Uithuizen (NL).
After more than four years I changed the books for a carpenters' training and I worked several years as such. Till my back didn't allow it anymore.
Since than I followed several bookbinding workshops and courses. I owe many thanks to Katinka Keus.
From 1985 I concentrated me in the making of boxes. Building, but now with cardboard. Fascinating, what a possibilities!
In 1992 I started in Groningen my own box factory/bindery.
Since 1996 I give courses and workshops in the making of boxes, in the inland and abroad.

I love the whole process of the inventing and making books and boxes. New books and boxes. Not the repairing of them.
What I make has to be extremely functional, solid in its construction, with a good design and an optimal finishing touch of the materials.
The ceaseless searching and the inventing of new binding methods and constructions keeps the excitement for me. I love the challenge in moving the limits of what I can do.
In the course of time my work became more sober: Is there something nicer than soft as velvet sanded bare grey cardboard?
