The magnetic box’s original idea belongs to Hélène Jolis, a French book artist and well known teacher of gold tooling techniques. Her idea, developped first by Sün Evrard, was further improved by Eva Szily.
The box is made of 250-400 gsm paper, it feels light and strong at the same time.
Wooden rods covered in paper reinforce head, tail and in case also the fore-edge; the box is closed with magnetic strips.
Two different models will be taught.
The conservation bindings are flexible paper bindings. One is a two sections binding (and its single section version).
The other is a kind of a «long stitch binding with cut spine» (reliure à dos fendu), where the sections are directly sewn to the cover. The visible sewing threads on the spine serve as a frame to be wowen with multicolour linen threads.
The boxes will be custom-made to house the bindings.
To facilitate our progress during the workshop, all the material will be provided, pre-cut to size.
