This masterclass, based on Carmencho Arregui's Crossed Structure Binding, will develop your capacity to deal with an unusual way of thinking in a perfectly balanced asymmetry, and your everyday practice will benefit of this extra understanding of books' motion.
 
Over the course of the thirty hours of the class, we will gradually enter this theme with a methodical and structured approach, so that it will be possible to understand the simplicity behind what is apparently complex, and to face the complexity of what is apparently simple.
 
After a brief introduction on the origins and meaning of this structure, we will deal with 9 different variations of the Crossed Structure Binding, making 9 sample books with blank pages and covers in handmade paper.
 
This Part One, which discloses the secrets of all the models designed by Carmencho Arregui (plus one), is preparatory to the Part Two, which develops the application of structures with covers in leather and parchment on actual books, accessible only to those who have already followed the first part.

This is a masterclass, therefore it is designed for experienced bookbinders, although not necessarily professionals. We will give for granted some basic bookbinding knowledge, about piercing, folding, cutting, measuring.
 

PART ONE PRELIMINARY FOR PART TWO, which will take place in summer 2023 at Leksands Folk High School, Sweden - INFO HERE

LOCATION
The course will take place in the form of an online webinar on Zoom platform.

TIME TABLE
The course will take place in 15 biweekly meetings, on Mondays and Thursdays, every evening from 19 to 21 (UTC+1). Participants will work at the same time as the teacher, and at the beginning and at the end of each work session there will be time for questions and answers; the sessions will be recorded and will also be available at a later date, once the course is over.

The course will be held in English.

TOOLS
Participants will be provided with a detailed list of necessary tools.
 
MATERIALS
After registration, participants will be provided with a detailed list of the materials they will need to prepare; those who are in EU will be able to purchase the ready-made kit at the additional cost of 40 euros plus shipping costs. The kit must be booked without fail by 13 January 2023.

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT

Registration must be made before the closing date.
Participation fee: 510 euro.
 
Membership to the Association for 2023 is requested (30 euro).

The course is limited in number: upon reaching the maximum number admitted, it is possible to ask to be placed on the waiting list.
Closing date for enrolment and payment of the fee: 19 January 2023.
The final enrollment order is determined by the payment order, however the payment can only be done from 1 January 2023; therefore, registration made on an earlier date counts as pre-registration and, in order for the enrollment to be confirmed, it will be necessary to make the payment as soon as possible at the start of the new social year (1 January 2023) and notify it by mail to the Secretariat.

CANCELLATION - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Enrolment must be cancelled in writing.
If the cancellation letter is posted three weeks or more before the workshop begins, the participation fee will be refunded minus a 15% cancellation charge.
If the cancellation letter is posted less than three weeks but before the closing date of enrollments, then the participation fee will be refunded minus a 50% cancellation charge.
No refund will be given in case of cancellation after the closing date. Yet, if a person on the waiting list could take over, the fee will be refunded in full (to the exclusion of any membership fee paid contextually, covering the administration costs and not refundable). 
No refund will be given if, once registered and without further communication, the student doesn't partecipate.
In case the minimum number of participants should not be reached, the course will be cancelled and the whole fee refunded.
The confirmation of the feasibility of the workshop will be announced to the participants after the closing of entries, or when the minimum number of enrolments will be reached.
