This specific course will give a basic knowledge of the care and conservation of books. You will not need expensive and cumbersome equipment but will learn to take care of your books using simple materials and instruments that are not difficult to obtain. Those people who work with books or surrounded by them may acquire a correct conservation attitude.
Specific knowledge is not required.
This course is intended for beginners but participants with a basic knowledge of bookbinding will be welcome. Different kinds of experience and background make very stimulating groups.

Theory, demonstrations and practice will provide the basis of this course.
A brief history of traditional bookbinding techniques and the study of the "building" of a binding will be part of the theoretical programme, together with an attentive analysis of the original materials and the identification of the causes of damage that will indicate the correct treatment to be adopted in each particular case.

Practical demonstrations of basic care such as: dry cleaning and washing, mending and restoration of damaged papers, fixing stabilization and consolidation as well as unsewing and sewing techniques, preparation of different kinds of adhesives and restoration and retouching of the original covers both in paper and in boards, will permit a thorough understanding and will give the possibility to find suitable solutions for a wide range of problems.

All participants will be encouraged to try different techniques and will receive technical assistance and advise in order to choose the more suitable solutions for the repair of their own books (interventions on valuable books will be discouraged until a good enough understanding and ability have been reached).

The course will take place at Professione Libro,
Via Angelo Del Bon, 1 - 20158 MILAN - I

TIME AND CALENDAR
9 monthly encounters are planned, in order to give to the participants the opportunity to practice at home between two encounters the techniques discussed during the lessons.
The encounters are planned always on Thursday, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm (1h lunch break, coffee breaks).
It will be possible to eat all together in a bar close to the workshop.

The planned dates are as follows:
22 October / 12 November / 17 December / 14 January / 11 February / 10 March / 7 April / 5 May / 9 June

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT
Registration must be made before the closing date.
There is limited availability so you are invited to book early; payment dates will determine booking priorities.

The participation fee for the whole cycle of 9 encounters (63h) is 960 euro, including coffe breaks, costs of materials (paper, cardboard, glue, cloth) and the use of tools, provided by the organizers; particular materials like leather, vellum, wood are excluded.
Participants have to bring their books to repair/rebind, in addition to possible special materials needful to their project.
The fee must be paid in 4 tranches of 240 euro as follows:
I - no later than 15 October
II - no later than 17 December
III - no later than 11 February
IV - no later than 7 April

Joining the association is necessary: membership 25 euro.


CANCELLATION - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Enrolment must be cancelled in writing. If the cancellation letter is posted before the enrolments closing date, the paid tranche will be refunded minus a 15% of the total fee as cancellation charge.
No refund will be given in case of cancellation after the closing date or if, once registered and without further communication, the student doesn't partecipate.
In case the minimum number of participants should not be reached, the course will be cancelled and the whole fee refunded.
